Different Orthodontic Treatments Available at Mossley Street Dental near Hyde to Enhance Your Smile

What is orthodontics? In a nutshell, it’s the study and treatment of improper bites. The word itself is partly derived from the Greek ‘orthos’, meaning straight, proper or perfect, and ‘odous’, meaning tooth. It should be no surprise then, following a little linguistic detective work, that orthodontics tends to be where brace treatment crops up, and at Mossley Dental we offer several forms of brace treatment.

Invisalign braces

Invisalign braces are completely clear and almost completely undetectable making them a great choice for anyone who may feel self-conscious having a brace. The treatment works in increments, with a new brace being provided roughly every three weeks. Invisalign is, unfortunately, not suitable for severe orthodontic issues, but is for the majority of crooked teeth problems.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are like traditional fixed braces but instead of fixing the wires and brackets to the front of the teeth they are fitted to the back. Lingual braces are hard to notice, much like Invisalign, but, rather than working in increments, are fixed.

Damon braces

Unlike traditional braces, which require elastic ties to hold the arch wires in place that can cause discomfort, Damon braces use a sliding mechanism, which makes tooth movement more comfortable and makes the brace easier to clean. Damon braces are also designed to help produce a straight smile whilst trying to minimise the need for a tooth extraction. Extraction is sometimes necessary during orthodontic treatment so that other teeth can move into their proper positions.

Inman aligners

Treatment with Inman aligners can be very quick, sometimes taking as a little as two months to straighten teeth, but they are not suitable for all cases. Inman aligners are removable and rely on a coiled spring and a bar that gently push and pull the teeth into position.

Other options

These four are just the tip of the iceberg. To discuss all the orthodontic treatments we offer, please book a consultation at Mossley Street Dental near Hyde. We will be more than happy to guide you through all the procedures available.

Damon braces symposium in South Manchester

Mr Winston attended a Damon braces symposium in South Manchester last week which was attended by about 30 orthodontists from around the UK.

The day included an update of the latest research on Damon braces including the benefits over conventional braces which include quicker treatments, less friction which makes teeth easier to move with more gentle forces, better rotational control of teeth, and there was an emphasis on non-extraction treatments.

It was felt that whenever possible treatments should be carried out without taking out healthy teeth. This encourages expansion of the side teeth which gives a wider and fuller smile. And because the teeth give support to the lips the end result often improves the face and profile of the patient too!

Mr Winston discussed a case of a patient he treated from Manchester who had had a previous consultation at an orthodontist for tooth straightening with invisible braces but had been advised to have four healthy teeth removed.  Sometimes this is necessary but Mr Winston is now finding that more and more cases can be treated beautifully without taking out these teeth. This patient was therefore treated on a non-extraction basis with Damon braces and the braces were removed just a couple of months ago.

Mr Winston offers a free no obligation initial consultation so if you would like a second opinion or are interested in any type of brace system then phone our reception to book an appointment.

Why Is It Important To Straighten Teeth With Your Saddleworth Dentist?

You may have thought the only reason to straighten your teeth was to gain the perfect smile, but there are also other important reasons to straighten your teeth, which can have an effect on a number of things, from your speech to your oral hygiene.

Misaligned teeth can cause issues with self-esteem and having them realigned with a Saddleworth dentist can provide the basis for new confidence.

However, misaligned teeth can also have a negative effect on your oral hygiene. This is because misaligned teeth can make it harder for you to brush your teeth, allowing plaque to gather around your teeth. This then leads to bad oral health, as once the plaque begins to gather around your teeth, they become vulnerable to decay and general damage. By having misaligned teeth straightened you can avoid this, as your teeth will become much easier to clean and keep in good health.

Your speech can also be affected by the problem of misaligned teeth, which can make it difficult for you to make certain sounds, leading to further self-esteem issues. The way you eat can also be affected, as misaligned teeth aren’t able to properly perform their job of breaking down food, which could lead to a change in diet.

The issue of misaligned teeth can be solved quite easily through the use of dental systems like Invisalign invisible braces and ‘Six Month Smiles,’ which can correct the aligning of your teeth without the added issue of a mouth full of metal.

So make an appointment with your dentist to see which is best for you to correct your misaligned teeth.

Invisible STB light lingual braces available at Mossley Dental

These STB lingual braces have revolutionised the treatment of patients who want invisible tooth straightening.

There are various options available if you want straight teeth but you don’t want traditional “train track” braces. A common choice by many of our patients are clear plastic/ceramic braces. They are far less noticeable than old style braces and now the wires come with a white coating which makes them blend in even better. These modern wires are used for all our clear brace patients. Although not 100% invisible from our experience all of our patients tell us how surprised how good they look after they have been fitted.

Another option is Invisalign or Clearstep or for more mild cases Simpli5 . These use aligners or very thin transparent gum shields. Each one moves your teeth about a quarter of a millimeter and once it has done its job it is taken out and the next one put in. These are practically invisible and have the benefit that they can be taken in and out for eating and cleaning.

But if you want 100% invisible now you can have straight teeth and if you didn’t want to tell anyone, nobody need ever know you are in treatment. Lingual braces are fitted on the inside (tongue side) of your teeth. Now STB light lingual braces are very low profile to make them very comfortable and they work in a similar way to Damon braces in that the forces are very gentle and move teeth very quickly. These lingual braces can be used in a similar way to six month smiles braces and so treatment can be completed very quickly.

Not many practices provide all these treatment options and at Mossley Dental Care Mr Winston has vast experience in the field of orthodontics having provided these type of treatments for his patients since he qualified over ten years ago.

Lingual Braces Treatment at Your Ashton Under Lyne Private Dentist

Lingual braces in Ashton under Lyne are an alternative to traditional braces and are a much more discreet way to straighten your teeth, as they are fitted to the back of the teeth making them completely invisible.

How do Lingual braces work?

The Lingual brace is comprised of small brackets and arch wires that are custom made just for you, so they fit comfortably inside your mouth. Although they are fitted to the back of your teeth Lingual braces work in almost the same way as a traditional brace, but have the advantage of being completely unnoticeable.

How do I get a Lingual brace?

There are two different stages when receiving your Lingual brace. The first stage is an assessment with your dentist where an impression of your teeth will be made, which will then be used to create your custom-fitted Lingual brace. The second stage will involve your dentist attaching your new Lingual Brace. The brace pieces are cemented to the back of the teeth, before the wire arch is finally attached to complete your Lingual Brace fitting.

What are the advantages of Lingual braces?

There are a number of advantages that come with the Lingual Brace, such as their being practically invisible. They are also a great deal more effective than modern, removable aligner systems, which can only be used to treat minor orthodontic problems. With Lingual braces a whole range of dental problems can be solved, such as twisted teeth, crooked teeth, overbites and gaps, as a greater level of control can be achieve when using fixed braces.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment time depends on each person’s individual circumstance, but Lingual braces have been able to treat conditions in as little as 6 weeks. Your dentist can tell you the estimated time during your initial consultation.

Lingual Braces can cost anywhere between £3,000 and £5,000 depending on the circumstances of your orthodontic condition. Discuss the costs with your dentist before you begin treatment and also ask about payment plans, which many dental practices now offer.
