Why are my gums inflamed, sore and bleeding?

The two most common types of gum disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Whilst they both present with inflamed, sore and bleeding gums they are quite different diseases and our dentists at Mossley Dental Care can assess you and determine what type of gum disease you have and then prescribe appropriate treatment.

We have dental hygienists and therapists at Mossley Dental Care who are university trained dental professionals who treat gingivitis and periodontitis in our practice. Very often your gums are inflamed because of tartar under the gum line that you cannot see and may not even be aware of but needs to be removed and our team is equipped with a dedicated hygiene suite at Mossley Dental Care and we can treat moderate to severe forms of gum disease at our practice.

Are bleeding gums a sign of gum disease?

It is important to know that bleeding gums are not normal. Although it is quite common in the general population healthy gums should not bleed and this is one of the indicators that we use at Mossley Dental to assess your gum condition.

Although there may be other causes of bleeding gums most commonly the answer to this question is yes, bleeding gums is a sign of gum disease and should not be left untreated.

At Mossley Dental Care our dentists will assess your needs and prescribe appropriate treatment which will often involve treatment with our hygienists along with appropriate preventative advice.

How can gum disease to be treated?

Gum disease cannot be cured but it can be stabilised. The problem is that some people are more prone to gum disease than others. If you are prone or susceptible to gum disease it means that a small amount of plaque can cause a lot of damage in your mouth. This means that your twice daily oral hygiene routine needs to be perfect. We will provide you with all the support and advice that is necessary so that you can do what is required to keep gum disease under control.

Our hygienists will also remove the plaque and tartar under the gum line which is causing the problem. We are equipped with ultrasonic equipment which removes tartar quickly and effectively.

Treatment

Treatment for gum disease involves:

– Excellent oral hygiene routines including tooth brushing and inter-dental cleaning (cleaning in-between your teeth)
– Stop smoking – if you smoke we will explain the connection between smoking and gum disease and encourage you to cut down and hopefully eventually stop altogether
– Non-surgical cleaning of the root surfaces – to remove all the tartar which is causing the gum disease
– Gum surgery – Only in severe cases and is not commonly necessary for gingivitis or periodontitis.
