Invisalign Explained to Patients From Stockport

What is it?

Invisalign is a modern alternative to conventional teeth straightening treatments, offering a quick solution to minor imperfections in the alignment of the teeth. The process involves a series of aligners that are specially crafted to the patient’s teeth, and are – as the name suggests – practically invisible, which makes them a popular choice for people who may feel self conscious or embarrassed about wearing braces. This treatment involves far less discomfort than its alternatives, using revolutionary technology that can help to drastically improve a patient’s crooked smile.

The Technology

Patients considering Invisalign can now benefit from a high-tech 3D simulation of how the treatment will affect their teeth. Using ClinCheck software, your dentist can now show you a computerised model of your teeth and show how much movement each individual aligner can offer. This is beneficial as the patient can see the predicted end result before deciding whether it is worth their time and money. Bet you never thought you could have a try-before-you-buy smile!

The Process

If the patient approves of the predicted end result, the process can get underway. It’s really rather simple:

1)      Using the 3D model of the teeth and the latest technology, the first Invisalign tray is crafted to suit the structure of the patient’s teeth.

2)      This first custom tray is worn by the patient for two weeks, allowing it to gradually alter the alignment of the teeth, millimetre by millimetre.

3)      When the patient’s teeth fit the mould, a new tray is crafted and again worn for two weeks. This process is repeated until the desired effect is achieved.

The number of aligners used varies from patient to patient, but will often be between 18 and 36, meaning the perfect smile can be achieved in just 9 to 18 months! Contact us at Mossley Dental Care near to Stockport for more information of Invisalign.

Patients near Stockport can Benefit from Invisible Teeth Straightening with Lingual Braces

What are lingual braces?

Lingual braces are custom made and fitted to the back of a patient’s teeth in order for them to appear invisible to other people. The braces are made in two parts, brackets and arch wires. Where as with traditional braces the brackets are attached to the front of the teeth, Lingual braces are cemented to the back of the teeth, making them the more attractive alternative to the traditional brace.

However, the Lingual brace has pretty much the same function as the traditional brace as it sets out to correct bad bites, misaligned teeth, gaps, crowding and rotated teeth and pushes the teeth into a straighter position. They can also be worn on both the top and bottom teeth just like the traditional brace.

Fitting a Lingual Brace

The Lingual brace system is fitted over two visits, which requires three to five day intervals. At your first visit you will have an impression taken of your teeth with a plastic mould that will then be sent off so the brackets can be made and customised to fit your teeth. During your second visit the dentist will cement the back of each individual bracket before they are put into place on the back of the teeth. After this is done, the wire will then be threaded through the brackets at the back of the teeth, which creates pressure to move the teeth into a straighter position.

Lingual braces tend to be more expensive than the traditional brace and can take longer to show positive results and usually take one to three years instead of the one to two years with traditional braces. However, patients near Stockport and throughout the UK do not need to worry about their appearance during this time, so even though treatment takes longer, no one will ever see it.

What should Patients near Stockport Look Out for when Checking for Gum Disease?

Gum disease is one of the main reasons for adult tooth loss for patients near Stockport and throughout the UK and happens when plaque is left around the gum lines of the teeth. The bacteria that is present within plaque produces acids along with other toxins, that if left for too long can destroy bone and gum tissue, leaving the person in question in a lot of pain.

If detected within its early stages gum disease can be easily treated. So if you suffer with any of these symptoms they could be warning signs that you have developed gum disease. Therefore it is important to notify your dentist, just to be on the safe side:

  1. Your gums are swollen, tender and red.
  2. Your gums bleed easily.
  3. Your gums appear to be coming away from the teeth.
  4. You have a bad taste or bad breath in your mouth quite frequently.
  5. You can see pus between your teeth and gums when they are pressed.
  6. If you wear dentures or partials, if the fit has changed get them checked.
  7. Your teeth feel loose or are separating.
  8. You have noticed a change in the way you bite or the way that your teeth fit together.

Although gum disease can result in the loss of teeth, it is important to note that a good oral hygiene routine can help prevent the causes of gum disease. You should ensure that you brush your teeth at least two times a day for a minimum of two minutes, although this doesn’t remove the hidden trapped plaque between your teeth.

Therefore you should ensure that you use dental floss and mouthwash on a daily basis, as these will help to remove and kill the plaque located between the teeth that your toothbrush can’t quite reach.

Patients Near Stockport can Restore Their Damaged, Broken Smile using Dental Implants

Unless you really want an authentic air in your performance of the Pirates of Penzance, losing a tooth may not seem to have too many advantages.  But how do you go about filling that gap? Dentures were once the main solution but dental implants are now the most popular choice. This is because of and their ability to maintain and encourage the growth of surrounding dental tissue, as well as their longer term effectiveness.

Benefits over other treatments

The obvious of dental implants in comparison to dentures are their functionality. When done correctly, a dental implant will function just like a normal tooth. A common occurrence after tooth loss is atrophy (the gradual decay of the bone where the tooth used to sit), which can cause changes in jaw shape. Dental implants can help maintain and encourage the growth of the bone structure. The procedure also does not require healthy teeth surrounding the gap to be affected, whereas dental bridges can need nearby teeth to be removed in order to accommodate the replacement tooth.

The procedure

Firstly, the state of your teeth and gums will be assessed. If there are any symptoms that you are suffering from gum disease or tooth decay, these will need to be attended to before treatment can begin. Planning the procedure will require x-rays and, possibly a CT scan to consider the quality of the bone tissue and any anatomical structures to evade during drilling. It should be noted that implants need a good quality and quantity of available bone, but if this isn’t the case there is always the possibility of a bone graft.

The gum, in the area where the implant is to sit, is cut and lifted, after which a hole is made in a precise location on the jaw using a dental drill. A titanium implant is then fitted tightly into this socket and the gums are then stitched over the dental implant. Once placed, the implant is left to heal for between 6 weeks and 6 months. After this healing period, a temporary crown is fitted for between four and six weeks. After this, the permanent prosthesis can be fitted.

If you have any questions concerning dental implant please feel free to call the practice. We are based in Stockport but provide services for patients throughout the North and the UK.

Patients from Stockport have nothing to fear from orthodontic treatment

Orthodontic treatment is one of the most common forms of dentistry. Problems with crooked teeth and gaps may require braces if this affects the function or perhaps aesthetics of a smile. Teenagers can dread being told that they need braces, as many still imagine that they will have to spend years with ugly metal “train-tracks” stuck on their teeth. However, the orthodontic solutions available today are very different.

Whether the patient is a teenager or an adult patient, the problem is tooth gaps or crooked teeth, there are likely to be the same fears and concerns. Will orthodontic treatment hurt? Will the braces look ugly? How long will the treatment take? The thing about these concerns is that are often a fear of the unknown – or worse, a fear brought on by false horror stories spiralling around the school playground.

Modern braces available to patients from Stockport and surrounding vicinities are much more comfortable. Many are even designed to be virtually invisible. The trend today is towards removable aligners rather than fixed braces, so you can even take them out if you have a special occasion coming up. However, don’t be tempted to take them out too often or the treatment will take a lot longer than it should.

There are plenty of people who just have a general fear of the dentist – and their hearts are bound to sink when they hear that they need orthodontic treatment. Teeth straightening can involve several appointments to make sure things are progressing, but we are happy to help you overcome this anxiety. Please come and see one of the friendly team members at our practice and we will be happy to answer your questions, show you round the clinic and do what we can to make you feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Fillings the Gaps at Mossley Dental Care for Patients from Stockport

For adults, tooth loss can be a stressful and unpleasant experience because, unlike baby teeth, permanent teeth are not naturally replaced by another tooth. Having a gap in your smile can make eating and speaking difficult and uncomfortable, not to mention the effect it can have on your confidence. It is therefore important that you look after your teeth and maintain good oral hygiene in order to prevent tooth loss.

Mossley Dental Care, which provides treatment for patients from Stockport, look at some of the main causes of missing teeth:

Injury

It is possible to lose a tooth through injury no matter how old or young you are. Although accidents happen, precautions can be taken in certain circumstances. For instance, it is important to wear mouth guards when participating in contact sports or any other activities where your teeth may be at risk of trauma.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is caused by foods that are high in sugar or are particularly acidic, which lead to the formation of plaque – the sticky, white substance found on teeth. The bacteria in plaque gradually break down the tissue in the tooth, causing cavities that can lead to infection or tooth loss.

Gum disease

Gum disease is caused by the bacteria found in plaque. If left untreated, the gums recede from the teeth and the supporting bone tissue fixing the teeth in place is eventually lost. The teeth then become loose and fall out.

Smoking

Smoking increases the risk of developing periodontal (gum) disease. Smokers are more likely to develop gum disease than non-smokers, and are therefore more likely to suffer from tooth loss.

Whilst it is important to prevent tooth loss before it happens, if you have missing teeth and you want to fill the gap, at Mossley Dental Care we have a number of options. You might want to consider dental implants – porcelain teeth that are attached to titanium metal rods. These metal rods are inserted into the jaw bone in place of the tooth root. Implants can be inserted into both the top and bottom jaw to replace one tooth or multiple teeth. They can even be used to secure a full set of dentures.

If you’re worried about tooth loss or have missing teeth that you’d like to replace, contact reception to arrange an appointment.

Nervous Patients can have Braces from Stockport serving dentists too

Nervous about your next dental appointment? You’re not the only one.

Dental phobia is a common problem and many people are scared of going to the dentist for a number of reasons.

  • Perhaps you haven’t been to the dentist in a long time and are worried that you will need a lot of dental work?
  • Perhaps the sound of the drill puts you off or the fear of injections or pain?
  • You might have had a bad experience with a dentist in the past that has put you off dentists altogether?

In recent years, dentists have focussed more and more on identifying the primary causes of dental phobia and developing new techniques for calming nerves and giving patients the best possible experience of dental care.

If a fear of your Stockport serving dentist has stopped you from getting straighter teeth and a beautiful smile, then read on, as you might just change your mind.

Why is it important to visit the dentist?

Regular dental check-ups help ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy and they can quickly identify and treat small problems before they become more serious. Neglected oral hygiene often leads to bad breath, discoloured teeth and much more serious problems, including gum disease and tooth loss. These issues can lead to problems with eating and speaking, as well as affecting your confidence.

What can a brace do for me?

Due to the advancement of orthodontic technologies, tooth alignment problems can easily be corrected. Gone are the days when the only solution was the traditional metal braces, popularly known as ‘train tracks’. Today, contemporary dental practitioners feel that it is important that the patient has choice in his or her dental treatment. At Mossley Dental Care, we offer this choice, with a variety of braces and aligners to suit your needs and requirements. With our ‘invisible’ braces, you can avoid the discomfort and the embarrassment of traditional braces and have straight teeth in just a few months and there’s not a drill in sight!

If you feel that you’re nerves are getting the better of you, come in and talk to us. There are many possible ways of helping nervous patients, from relaxation techniques to sedation or hypnotherapy in more serious cases.

Remember, your dentist is there to help you stay healthy and send you home with a smile.

Teeth whitening treatment after braces in Stockport to complete the look

It can be hard work wearing braces, with weeks or months of dental appointments, discomfort and embarrassment ahead of you. Even those who are wearing the most modern invisible braces will wonder at times if the end result is really worth all the trouble. Of course on the final day of treatment, when you see the way your teeth looked before and the way they look now, you will realise that it has been more than worth it and that you now have the perfect smile you have always dreamed of.

Although, there may be something else you can do to make your smile even more dazzling. Wearing braces for a long period of time could have left your teeth looking less than pearly white, either due to your inability to keep them completely clean or because of the cement stains left behind on your teeth from the braces themselves.

Luckily, there are several teeth whitening treatments available that can restore your teeth to their former glory, or make them look even better than they have for years. Some people choose to use home teeth-whitening treatments, assuming that products bought on the High Street and those available in the dental clinic use the same active ingredients and will both have the same results. Dentists are allowed to use teeth whitening treatments that contain higher amounts of these active ingredients than those you can buy in your local supermarket. This guarantees better and longer-lasting results, while you can also be assured that the process will be carried out safely and effectively by a trained professional.

Dentists can even offer treatments not available on the High Street, such as laser teeth whitening, to complete the look after treatment like invisible braces. These work in a similar way to conventional products, with the application of a whitening agent, but the teeth are then exposed to a laser for faster and more impressive results. After all if you have spent all that time and money on orthodontic treatment to make sure your smile is as straight as possible, isn’t it worth spending a little more to make sure your teeth are also as white as possible?
