Different Orthodontic Treatments Available at Mossley Street Dental near Hyde to Enhance Your Smile

What is orthodontics? In a nutshell, it’s the study and treatment of improper bites. The word itself is partly derived from the Greek ‘orthos’, meaning straight, proper or perfect, and ‘odous’, meaning tooth. It should be no surprise then, following a little linguistic detective work, that orthodontics tends to be where brace treatment crops up, and at Mossley Dental we offer several forms of brace treatment.

Invisalign braces

Invisalign braces are completely clear and almost completely undetectable making them a great choice for anyone who may feel self-conscious having a brace. The treatment works in increments, with a new brace being provided roughly every three weeks. Invisalign is, unfortunately, not suitable for severe orthodontic issues, but is for the majority of crooked teeth problems.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are like traditional fixed braces but instead of fixing the wires and brackets to the front of the teeth they are fitted to the back. Lingual braces are hard to notice, much like Invisalign, but, rather than working in increments, are fixed.

Damon braces

Unlike traditional braces, which require elastic ties to hold the arch wires in place that can cause discomfort, Damon braces use a sliding mechanism, which makes tooth movement more comfortable and makes the brace easier to clean. Damon braces are also designed to help produce a straight smile whilst trying to minimise the need for a tooth extraction. Extraction is sometimes necessary during orthodontic treatment so that other teeth can move into their proper positions.

Inman aligners

Treatment with Inman aligners can be very quick, sometimes taking as a little as two months to straighten teeth, but they are not suitable for all cases. Inman aligners are removable and rely on a coiled spring and a bar that gently push and pull the teeth into position.

Other options

These four are just the tip of the iceberg. To discuss all the orthodontic treatments we offer, please book a consultation at Mossley Street Dental near Hyde. We will be more than happy to guide you through all the procedures available.

Patients from Rochdale can Experience a Lovely White Smile with Tooth Whitening Treatments

Britain is a nation of tea drinkers, but sadly tea stains the teeth. Other popular drinks, such as wine and cola, are equally responsible for a slight yellowing of the previously pearly whites. How then can we return our discoloured fangs to their former sparkling glory? Elementary, dear reader: With a simple teeth whitening procedure.

Teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a procedure, available in many forms, which removes stains and discolouration from the teeth. Most procedures are based around a bleaching process. At Mossley Dental near Rochdale we offer: Home teeth whitening, deep bleaching, Zoom! whitening and a combination approach incorporating Zoom! and Home whitening procedures.

Home whitening

Most of this procedure can be done from home. A mould of your teeth will be made and then turned into a custom fit mouth guard. A mouth guard in conjunction with professional whitening gel can produce effective results in about two weeks. We will guide you through every step of the process, to ensure an effective home treatment.

Deep bleaching protocol

Utilising ‘super sealed’ bleaching gum shields, sealing the gel in place, this process arguably achieves whiter teeth than home whitening, but requires both in-surgery application of the gel and home application.

Zoom! whitening

Zoom! is one of the most popular whitening systems available. Unlike the two previously mentioned procedures, Zoom! whitening can be completed in about an hour. Zoom! utilises a gel activated by ultraviolet light. Together, the gel and light work to break up stains on the teeth and whiten the teeth. Our combination procedure follows up Zoom! treatment with home whitening: A double threat to persistent stains.

Suitability

It should be noted that many people are not suitable for teeth whitening, particularly those suffering from gum disease or other dental problems. It should also be noted that teeth whitening will not affect the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings. Don’t worry though, as any potential problems will be addressed during your initial consultation.

Patients Near Stockport can Restore Their Damaged, Broken Smile using Dental Implants

Unless you really want an authentic air in your performance of the Pirates of Penzance, losing a tooth may not seem to have too many advantages.  But how do you go about filling that gap? Dentures were once the main solution but dental implants are now the most popular choice. This is because of and their ability to maintain and encourage the growth of surrounding dental tissue, as well as their longer term effectiveness.

Benefits over other treatments

The obvious of dental implants in comparison to dentures are their functionality. When done correctly, a dental implant will function just like a normal tooth. A common occurrence after tooth loss is atrophy (the gradual decay of the bone where the tooth used to sit), which can cause changes in jaw shape. Dental implants can help maintain and encourage the growth of the bone structure. The procedure also does not require healthy teeth surrounding the gap to be affected, whereas dental bridges can need nearby teeth to be removed in order to accommodate the replacement tooth.

The procedure

Firstly, the state of your teeth and gums will be assessed. If there are any symptoms that you are suffering from gum disease or tooth decay, these will need to be attended to before treatment can begin. Planning the procedure will require x-rays and, possibly a CT scan to consider the quality of the bone tissue and any anatomical structures to evade during drilling. It should be noted that implants need a good quality and quantity of available bone, but if this isn’t the case there is always the possibility of a bone graft.

The gum, in the area where the implant is to sit, is cut and lifted, after which a hole is made in a precise location on the jaw using a dental drill. A titanium implant is then fitted tightly into this socket and the gums are then stitched over the dental implant. Once placed, the implant is left to heal for between 6 weeks and 6 months. After this healing period, a temporary crown is fitted for between four and six weeks. After this, the permanent prosthesis can be fitted.

If you have any questions concerning dental implant please feel free to call the practice. We are based in Stockport but provide services for patients throughout the North and the UK.

Patients from Dukinfield can Experience Strong, Stabilised Smiles with Dental Implants for Dentures

Dentures: Removable replacements for teeth, which nowadays can be nearly indistinguishable from legitimate teeth. However, one sure fire giveaway that you’re wearing dentures is, of course, when your teeth come loose. Losing your teeth can have a major impact on your self-image. Once dentures have been fitted, letting the illusion slip may also have a similar effect. You also have the basic problem of keeping dentures in place while eating, which may for many take precedence over self-image in terms of importance. Put the two together and you have a fairly miserable cocktail, one which our imaginary subject probably won’t even be drinking for fear of denture slippage.

Dental implant stabilisers

One way of avoiding slippage is to have dental implants fitted at Mossley Dental Care near Dukinfield, which hold the dentures in places. In this procedure, small titanium screws with ball-tops are placed into the jaw. Once your jaw has healed and your implants have integrated, your dentures are customized to snap onto the ball tops. They can be easily taken out for cleaning and such, by applying upward pressure to the front of the denture with your thumb. The process of implanting the screws will take about an hour, but may sometimes take longer. Post-procedure discomfort is usually minor and can easily be alleviated with medication.

Added bonus

Dentures, when worn without implants reduce the supply of blood to the jawbone, which causes immense deterioration and bone loss. When worn with dental implants however, stimulation to the bone is provided via the implants as they are anchored into the bone.

Consultation

If denture slippage is a problem for you, why not come in for a free consultation? Implant stabilised dentures could have a drastic impact on your quality of life.

Dental Treatment for Children-the Bedrock of Future Good Oral Health for Patients Near Stalybridge

Milk teeth are often thought of as a trial run for the real deal. This is a myth: Not only can damaged milk teeth affect how permanent teeth are aligned but also how a child’s face forms. Old habits also die hard and, even if they make it through with their milk teeth unscathed, a lax approach to oral hygiene is a sure-fire way to create serious dental problems in later life. Thus, children’s dentistry is kind of a big deal.

Services

At Mossley dental near Stalybridge, we are proud to provide for our child patients under the NHS. We encourage regular 3-month checkups, to monitor any changes, and, to avoid disrupting routines, will attempt to arrange checkups after school hours or during school holidays. Education plays a vital role in a child’s development, and learning how to look after their teeth is an important part of this. That is why we run regular open days, showing children how to clean their teeth and emphasising the importance of a healthy diet.

Cleaning babies’ teeth

Babies start developing their teeth whilst still in the womb and it is imperative that you start cleaning their teeth the moment they start to show. A tiny blob of children’s fluoride toothpaste on a child’s toothbrush (these have smaller heads and softer bristles than conventional brushes) will be best. An easy brushing method is to: seat the child on your lap, with their head lying against your front, and to brush in little circular motions. It is recommended you visit your dentist once a baby’s teeth appear, so that their development can be checked.

Cleaning children’s teeth

You will most likely have to clean your child’s teeth until they are about seven. During this time, try to get them into a regular routine: Brushing once after breakfast and once before bed, for two minutes. Learning this simple procedure can help them maintain a happy smile for the rest of their lives. If you have any queries or concerns, please get in touch!

Fast Yet Effective Teeth Straightening with 6 Month Smiles for Patients from Droyslden

The famed escape artists Harry Houdini once said that ‘no performer should attempt to bite off red-hot iron unless he has a good set of teeth.’ If taken a little less literally, Houdini’s phrase becomes emblematic of what a great smile, and the confidence it brings, can do for you both in the daily grind and social situations. Sadly, many of us need such a boost quicker than the two to three years that conventional teeth straightening can take. Thankfully, dentistry has kept abreast of modern bustle and produced the 6 Month Smiles treatment.

6 months!?

Yes, provided you are suitable for treatment.

Camouflaged braces

You won’t even need to wear conventional train-track braces for the six months. You will instead be fitted with small tooth coloured brackets and wires, which will only be visible up close.

Is there a catch?

Quell your suspicions, I will reveal all: Unlike children, who often require braces to fix bite problems caused by growth issues, most adults primarily request teeth straightening for cosmetic reasons. This often requires moving the front teeth without requiring any major alterations to the bite, which can shave off a significant amount of treatment time. The treatment uses new technical and technological developments, such as the special nickel titanium the wires are made of, to help adjust specific teeth. To top it all off, the treatment is also cheaper than conventional brace treatment.

The treatment itself

Assessment for suitability will take place during your first visit. This will involve the dentist taking some photographs, x-rays and examining your smile. You will then be fitted with the special braces, which will come directly from the 6 Month Smiles laboratory in the United States. Following your first fitting, you will then be required to visit your dentist every 4 or 5 weeks for a 10 to 15 minute check-up and adjustment until your treatment is complete.

If you need any more information on 6 Month Smiles please contact the practice. We provide services for patients throughout Droylsden and the UK.

Rejuvenating Smiles with a Smile Makeover for Patients from Denton

The French cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard once remarked that ‘Americans may have no identity, but they do have wonderful teeth.’ Contrastingly, terrible teeth seem to be embedded in the outsider’s view of British identity. In the modern age, however, an unsatisfying smile need not be part of anyone’s cultural baggage and a smile makeover may be one way of combating any unfortunate stigmas.

What is a smile makeover?

A smile makeover is an umbrella term encompassing various forms of treatment, and can mean different things to different people. One person may want a full Hollywood smile, another may simply want teeth whitening and their amalgam fillings replaced with composite material. What unites these forms of treatment is that they are all centred around cosmetic improvement.

Initial assessment

Before any treatment or plans of treatment are considered, a dentist will discuss any issues you have with your smile and an initial examination will take place. Following this, relevant treatment options will then be discussed.

Forms of treatment available

There are several, ranging from teeth whitening to dental implants. One form of treatment we at Mossley Dental Care near Denton find particularly effective are porcelain veneers. Veneers are, for teeth, what false nails are fingers: They are wafer thin shells of material which are bonded to the teeth. They can cover up a variety of ornamental ailments, including: Broken, damaged, discoloured and, to an extent, crooked teeth. They can also help cover up gaps between teeth. Veneers can be used to improve the look of a single tooth or the whole of your mouth.

Numerous treatments are available, and the whole purpose of a smile makeover is to give you the smile you desire. The price of a smile makeover can vary drastically. Porcelain Veneers, for example, can cost between £300 and £1500, but a more intensive smile reconstruction can be upward of £20,000. Book a consultation and we will guide you through all of the options available to you.

The Benefits of a Dental Hygienist’s Clean for Patients from Hyde

‘What is a dental hygienist,’ you may ask, ‘and how are they different to a standard dentist?’ Well, my imagined reader, a dental hygienist is someone who focuses on preventative oral healthcare. That is, they try and stop problems before they even have the chance to occur. The difference between the hygienist and the dentist being that their entire focus is on prevention. ‘Surely I can do all this myself, brushing twice for two minutes a day?’ you may say. My response would be, ‘but are you doing it correctly?’

The Cleaning

A hygienist’s main job is professionally cleaning a patient’s teeth, which is sometimes referred to as ‘scaling and polishing’. If you have been regularly forgetting to clean you might benefit from a professional cleaning. Even if you’ve been brushing religiously, there will still be areas that cannot be reached by a toothbrush or any other everyday cleaning methods. Hygienists use special tools to reach these areas and will remove the build up of plaque and calculus from them. Your teeth will also be polished, helping to remove any superficial stains. Regular appointments can also be beneficial as a hygienist will spot potential problems which may go unnoticed by the untrained observer.

Advice

Perhaps the most significant gift the hygienist can offer is the gift of knowledge. A hygienist will happily instruct you on the best brushing techniques and guide you through the best homecare products available. They may also offer dietary advice, regarding how your eating affects your teeth, or offer other advice regarding the mouth, such as giving up smoking. The main focus here is on prevention. You are in control of your mouth between dental checkups and following the hygienist’s instructions will help to prevent any problems developing between appointments. Whether it’s the cleaning itself, some new information or even just clarifying that you’ve been doing right, the hygienist plays a vital role in oral healthcare for patients near Hyde.
