What is orthodontics? In a nutshell, it’s the study and treatment of improper bites. Invisalign braces

Invisalign braces are completely clear and almost completely undetectable making them a great choice for anyone who may feel self-conscious having a brace. The treatment works in increments, with a new brace being provided roughly every three weeks. Invisalign is, unfortunately, not suitable for severe orthodontic issues, but is for the majority of crooked teeth problems.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are like traditional fixed braces but instead of fixing the wires and brackets to the front of the teeth they are fitted to the back. Lingual braces are hard to notice, much like Invisalign, but, rather than working in increments, are fixed.

Damon braces

Unlike traditional braces, which require elastic ties to hold the arch wires in place that can cause discomfort, Damon braces use a sliding mechanism, which makes tooth movement more comfortable and makes the brace easier to clean. Damon braces are also designed to help produce a straight smile whilst trying to minimise the need for a tooth extraction. Extraction is sometimes necessary during orthodontic treatment so that other teeth can move into their proper positions.

Inman aligners

Treatment with Inman aligners can be very quick, sometimes taking as a little as two months to straighten teeth, but they are not suitable for all cases. Inman aligners are removable and rely on a coiled spring and a bar that gently push and pull the teeth into position.

Teeth whitening?

Home whitening

Most of this procedure can be done from home. A mould of your teeth will be made and then turned into a custom fit mouth guard. A mouth guard in conjunction with professional whitening gel can produce effective results in about two weeks. We will guide you through every step of the process, to ensure an effective home treatment.

Deep bleaching protocol

Utilising ‘super sealed’ bleaching gum shields, sealing the gel in place, this process arguably achieves whiter teeth than home whitening, but requires both in-surgery application of the gel and home application.

Zoom! whitening

Zoom! is one of the most popular whitening systems available. Unlike the two previously mentioned procedures, Zoom! whitening can be completed in about an hour. Zoom! utilises a gel activated by ultraviolet light. Together, the gel and light work to break up stains on the teeth and whiten the teeth. Our combination procedure follows up Zoom! treatment with home whitening: A double threat to persistent stains.

Suitability

It should be noted that many people are not suitable for teeth whitening, particularly those suffering from gum disease or other dental problems. It should also be noted that teeth whitening will not affect the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings. Unless you really want an authentic air in your performance of the Pirates of Penzance, losing a tooth may not seem to have too many advantages.  But how do you go about filling that gap? Dentures were once the main solution but dental implants are now the most popular choice. This is because of and their ability to maintain and encourage the growth of surrounding dental tissue, as well as their longer term effectiveness.

Benefits over other treatments

The obvious of dental implants in comparison to dentures are their functionality. When done correctly, a dental implant will function just like a normal tooth. A common occurrence after tooth loss is atrophy (the gradual decay of the bone where the tooth used to sit), which can cause changes in jaw shape. Dental implants can help maintain and encourage the growth of the bone structure. The procedure also does not require healthy teeth surrounding the gap to be affected, whereas dental bridges can need nearby teeth to be removed in order to accommodate the replacement tooth.

The procedure

Firstly, the state of your teeth and gums will be assessed. If there are any symptoms that you are suffering from gum disease or tooth decay, these will need to be attended to before treatment can begin. Planning the procedure will require x-rays and, possibly a CT scan to consider the quality of the bone tissue and any anatomical structures to evade during drilling. It should be noted that implants need a good quality and quantity of available bone, but if this isn’t the case there is always the possibility of a bone graft.

The gum, in the area where the implant is to sit, is cut and lifted, after which a hole is made in a precise location on the jaw using a dental drill. A titanium implant is then fitted tightly into this socket and the gums are then stitched over the dental implant. Once placed, the implant is left to heal for between 6 weeks and 6 months. After this healing period, a temporary crown is fitted for between four and six weeks. After this, the permanent prosthesis can be fitted.
